Raum für Grammatik

Abstract

This article aims to show how people structure the space around them using grammatical constructions, which functions local (spatial) prepositions fulfill in this process and how to design efficient grammar lessons on this basis.

Grammar is understood as a conceptually motivated system of symbolic structures reflecting general principles of perception and based on human physical experiences. Grammatical structures express how people understand, structure and verbalize space (for example, Russian Я стою на солнце (literally, I'm standing on the sun); German Ich stehe in der Sonne (I'm standing in the sun)). These processes take place based on conceptual metaphorization (transfer of characteristics of concrete concepts to abstract concepts) and conceptualization (mental "constructing" of a situation). The result is reflected, among other things, in the selection of local prepositions. This article considers this process in detail taking into account the cognitive organization processes (structuring a scene into figure and background) and the spatial dimensions (conceptualization of the background as a zero, one, two or three dimensional entity). It will then show how these complex principles can be adapted for efficient language teaching through transparent grammatical animations and simple explanatory texts. The article is rounded off by some concrete teaching suggestions and a brief outlook.
