Transmediales Babylon: Überlegungen zum fremdsprachendidaktischen Potential der symbiotischen Einbindung von Narrativität, Multimodalität, Intermedialität und Authentizität in Arne Jyschs Graphic Novel Der nasse Fisch

Abstract

This contribution discusses the graphic novel Der nasse Fisch (Babylon Berlin) as a symbiotic phenomenon between visual and written artistry. The reader or viewer must not approach the graphic novel as they would approach a static image or a text-only narrative. Doing so would mean missing the experience of the medium as designed by the artist. The graphic novel’s forms of meaning-making emerge as multi-perspectival processes which subvert linear readings of texts or the limited intake of information when looking at a visual image without text or historical framing. Theoretical issues of authentication, visual styles and the pairing of image and text inform this contribution’s exploratory probing of the narrative strategies and aesthetic impact of Der nasse Fisch as a multimode crime novel. The contribution concludes with some thoughts on the usefulness and advantages of incorporating the genre of the graphic novel into the interdisciplinary teaching of foreign languages.
